programmesEuropean-US Business Certificate in European Affairs
(13 days visitors program in Brussels and Ghent)

The introduction in many European Union (EU) Member States of a common currency, the euro, and mutual recognition of standards have made the European market both more competitive and more open. With the ongoing consolidation of distribution channels and retailers, marketing for many goods can now be done with a pan-European perspective.

The intensive Visiting program in European Affairs focuses on the US business environment in Europe. It considers the activities of US Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) and multinationals, including the government policies towards them. Furthermore, the curriculum surveys theories of international trade, foreign direct investment, international financial institutions, differences in political economy and culture, barriers to trade, foreign exchange, business-government relations, and the strategic alternatives available to companies operating in the global economy. Finally the implications for US entrepreneurs relating to the European Single market are analysed, particularly the common Euro currency and the freedom of movement for capital, goods and services.

Faculty and practitioners examine the trade and commercial policies of the EU, the role and impact of regulation and competition of the business environment by the EU, including the role of parties and pressure groups in lobbying the EU. A substantial number of lectures, including participation in issue-driven conferences, workshops, roundtables and seminars on current key business issues, will be presented by practitioners who have spent years working for or with the EU institutions. Drawing on information gleaned from both sides of the Atlantic, students develop a project for a paper at the end of the course in order to obtain the EU-USA business Certificate in European Affairs, graduate or undergraduate level.
